What to Wear for a Beach Couple Session

One of the most common questions we hear from couples booking a session is: "What should we wear?" It's a great question — and the answer can make or break your photos. After hundreds of couple sessions on the Adriatic coast, here are our tried-and-tested styling tips that will make you look and feel amazing in your images.

The Golden Rule: Coordinate, Don't Match

Please don't show up in matching outfits! Instead, choose a color palette of 2-3 complementary tones and build your outfits around them. When you coordinate rather than match, you look like a couple that belongs together without looking like you're in a uniform.

Colors That Photograph Beautifully

The Adriatic coast provides a backdrop of turquoise water, warm stone, golden sunlight, and green vegetation. Here's what works best against it:

  • Neutral earth tones: Beige, cream, tan, camel, soft brown — these are our favorites. They blend naturally with the Mediterranean landscape and look timeless in photos.
  • Soft pastels: Dusty rose, sage green, powder blue, lavender — these add a gentle pop of color without competing with the scenery.
  • White and ivory: Classic and clean. White against blue sea is always stunning. Just avoid pure bright white on both partners — it can overexpose in strong sunlight.
  • Warm terracotta and rust: These tones complement the red-earth tones of Dalmatian soil beautifully and photograph gorgeously at sunset.

Colors to avoid: Neon or very bright colors, large bold patterns, logos, and all-black outfits (they absorb light and lose detail). Small, fine patterns are fine — just avoid anything that creates visual "noise."

Fabrics That Move

The Adriatic is known for its gentle breeze, and we love using wind as a natural styling element in our photos. Choose fabrics that catch the breeze beautifully:

  • For her: Flowy maxi dresses, chiffon, linen, silk — anything that moves and drapes naturally. A long dress or skirt that catches the wind creates the most romantic, editorial-quality images.
  • For him: Linen shirts (rolled sleeves look great), light cotton trousers, chinos. Avoid stiff, formal fabrics unless that's the vibe you're going for.

Linen is the MVP of Adriatic photoshoots. It's breathable, it wrinkles beautifully (yes, really!), and it looks effortlessly Mediterranean.

Shoes (Or No Shoes)

For beach sessions, going barefoot is often the best choice — it's natural, comfortable, and photographs beautifully. If you prefer shoes:

  • For her: Strappy sandals, espadrilles, or delicate heeled sandals (avoid stilettos on sand or rocks)
  • For him: Clean leather sandals, loafers, or simply barefoot

Bring a comfortable pair for walking between locations and your photo pair for the actual session.

Accessories That Elevate

The right accessories can take your photos from beautiful to magazine-worthy:

  • Hats: A wide-brim straw hat adds instant bohemian elegance. We love them for solo portraits of the woman.
  • Jewelry: Keep it simple and delicate. Fine gold or silver necklaces, small earrings. Avoid large statement pieces that distract from your faces and expressions.
  • Sunglasses: Great for a few fun, editorial-style shots, but take them off for most photos. We want to see your eyes!
  • Scarves or shawls: A light scarf can add movement and visual interest. Especially beautiful on windy clifftop locations.

Hair & Makeup Tips

  • Hair: Loose, natural styles photograph best outdoors. Soft waves, a relaxed updo, or hair down with the wind in it. Avoid heavy, stiff updos — they look formal and fight the casual beach vibe.
  • Makeup: Go for a natural, enhanced look. The golden hour light does most of the work — heavy makeup can look unnatural in soft natural light. Waterproof mascara is a must if you're going near the water!
  • Glow: Light bronzer and a touch of highlighter on the cheekbones, shoulders, and collarbones looks incredible in golden hour light.

Practical Tips

  • Bring a change of outfit: We love when couples bring 2 looks — a dressier outfit and a more casual one. It gives variety and makes it feel like a mini fashion shoot.
  • Iron or steam your clothes: Even if you're going for relaxed linen, freshly steamed clothes photograph much better than wrinkled-from-the-suitcase ones.
  • Try it on together: Stand next to each other in front of a mirror. Do your outfits complement each other? Is one person significantly more formal than the other? Adjust until you're balanced.
  • Comfort is key: If you're fidgeting with your outfit, it will show in photos. Wear something you feel confident and comfortable in.
  • Weather prep: Bring a light layer for after sunset when it cools down. A cozy knit thrown over your shoulders can also make for beautiful photos.
